Smear Tests
What is a Smear Test?
Cervical Screening, also referred to as a smear test is offered to all women aged 25-64 on the NHS.
It is an important test because it can help prevent cervical cancer by finding abnormal cells early by checking the health of the cervix (the neck of the womb). Early detection allows for timely treatment, significantly reducing the risk of more severe health complications.
Why is it Important?
- Prevention of Cervical Cancer: By detecting abnormal cells early, smear tests help prevent cervical cancer from developing.
- Quick and Simple Procedure: The test takes only a few minutes and can provide peace of mind and safeguard your health.
- High Success Rate: Regular cervical screening saves thousands of lives every year in the UK.

FAQ
Why would I visit Simply Menopausal over my GP?
GP appointments tend to only be in ten minute slots. Currently getting a routine appointment is difficult and you may find it’s tricky to explain exactly what’s going on in that short time frame. Our appointments are 45 minutes long and we focus on understanding your concerns, health conditions and questions.
Is a smear test painful?
Most people experience slight discomfort that can feel uncomfortable but no pain is made. If at any time you wish for it to stop or to take a breather, we can support you. Our experienced nurse can help ease any concerns.
What if I feel nervous about the smear test?
Its normal to feel nervous. Discussing your worries with our experienced nurse beforehand will help. Your comfort and care is our top priority and we will do everything we can to make the experience more comfortable.
What will happen during a smear test?
- Preparation: You’ll be asked to lie on an examination couch and remove your lower clothing. Our experienced nurse will explain the procedure and ensure you’re comfortable.
- Speculum Insertion: A small instrument called a speculum is gently inserted into your vagina to widen it slightly.
- Sample Collection: Using a soft brush, a sample of cells is collected from your cervix.
- Aftercare: Your results will be emailed to you within a week. (if HPV is detected and further analysis is required, this can take up to 3 weeks). You will have an opportunity to discuss the results with your practitioner who will explain them to you and discuss if any further treatment is required. We can, on request send a copy of your results to your GP.

What is HPV?
HPV, or Human Papillomavirus is the name of a very common group of viruses that can affect the skin and the moist membranes lining the body, such as the mouth, throat, cervix, anus and genitals. There are over 100 different types of HPV, and while most are harmless, some strains can cause health problems.
Is HPV dangerous?
- Low -risk HPV: Some stains cause warts on the hands, feet, or genitals, which are generally harmless and treatable.
- High Risk HPV: Certain types of HPV, can cause changes in the cells that may lead to cancers such as cervical cancer if not detected and managed early.
Does HPV always mean cancer?
NO, the vast majority of HPV infections do not lead to cancer. Most High risk HPV infections clear up naturally, but in some cases, the virus persists, and abnormal cell changes can develop over time. Regular screening ensures any potential issues are caught early.
Understanding HPV is key to protecting your health, and staying up to date with vaccinations and screenings is the best way to manage risks.
Do I need a smear test if I've had HPV vaccine?
Yes, as the vaccine doesn’t protect against all strains of HPV. Regular screening is still essential.
When our estrogen levels drop during this time it can affect our bone health. As we lose bone mass there is a chance that brittle bones can lead to osteoporosis so keeping your hormone levels topped up can help combat this.
Similarly, HRT can help with heart health, weight gain, sleep, moods and vaginal health. Speak to Aly about your journey because not all journey’s have to be difficult and protecting ourselves early on can strengthen our later years.
