Navigating the Menopausal Maze: Insight into the common symptoms we hear the most. 

As a menopause nurse dedicated to supporting women through one of the most transformative phases of their lives, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the varied and often challenging symptoms that accompany menopause. Menopause, a natural biological process marking the end of a woman's reproductive years, can be a rollercoaster of physical and emotional changes and since nearly all women go through this process, symptoms in any form are far more common than you think. 

Hot Flashes and Night Sweats

Perhaps the most known or commonly reported symptom are hot flashes and night sweats. These sudden and intense waves of heat can be disruptive to daily life, affecting work, sleep, and overall well-being. Through my experience, I have found that understanding triggers and adopting lifestyle modifications can significantly alleviate these symptoms.

Mood Swings and Emotional Changes

Menopause isn't just a physical journey; it's an emotional one as well. Many women experience mood swings, irritability, and heightened emotional sensitivity during this time. 

Sleep Disturbances

Menopausal women frequently grapple with sleep disturbances, including difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Hormonal fluctuations, night sweats, and psychological factors contribute to these challenges. Vaginal Dryness and Sexual Discomfort

The decline in oestrogen levels during menopause can lead to vaginal dryness and discomfort during sexual activity. As a menopause nurse, I provide education on lubricants, moisturisers, and, when appropriate, hormone replacement therapy to alleviate symptoms and enhance sexual health.

Weight Gain and Changes in Body Composition

Metabolism can slow down during menopause, leading to weight gain and changes in body composition. I often counsel women on the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and muscle-strengthening activities to manage weight and promote overall health.
